REDS DROP 16TH STRAIGHT ON ROAD
Mungo Tosses 8th CG in 10 Starts
BROOKLYN, N.Y., May 27 (AP) - The horrible start to the season continued for the
Cincinnati Reds, who dropped their eighth consecutive game in a 6-2 defeat at
the hands of the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. The loss was the 16th
straight on the road for the Reds who fall to a sickly 4-27 on the year.
Cincinnati has now lost 14 of its last 15 contests.
The game was scoreless into the third inning but the Dodgers more or less put it
away in the bottom half of the frame, tallying five runs off Reds starter Paul
Derringer. Buzz Boyle started things off with a base hit and scored when
Lonny Frey doubled off the right-center field fence. Len Koenecke advanced
Frey to third with an opposite field single to left and Danny Taylor followed
with a base hit to right, scoring Frey and chasing Koenecke to third. Sam
Leslie's fielder's choice grounder forced Taylor for the first out of the
inning, but Koenecke scored the third Brooklyn run of the frame. Jim
Bucher's base hit left runners on first and second and Al Lopez then singled to
right center, scoring Leslie and moving Bucher to third. Jim Jordan's
infield hit plated Bucher with the fifth run of the inning and Derringer finally
escaped the third by striking out Mungo and retiring Boyle on a pop fly to
second.
That was more than enough for the Dodgers, but they added another run in the
sixth when Boyle and Frey slapped consecutive singles with one out and
Koenecke's grounder brought home Boyle.
Mungo took a four-hit shutout into the seventh but finally surrendered a pair of
runs to Cincinnati. Ernie Lombardi led off with a double and, one out
later, Linc Blakely drew a walk. Back-to-back base hits off the bats of
pinch hitter Harlin Pool and Sparky Adams each plated a run and the Dodgers lead
was down to 6-2. But Mungo stiffened and retired the next five batters he
faced, leaving the score at 6-2 entering the ninth.
Mungo issued consecutive free passes to Wes Schulmerich and Blakely to open the
final frame, putting the tying run in the on deck circle, but he never came to
the plate. Mungo struck out pinch hitter Adam Comorosky and Adams, then
retired Tony Piet on a foul pop to end the game.
It was the eighth complete game for Mungo in 10 starts thus far this season.
