SORRELL, BENGALS BEST CAIN, A'S IN CLASSIC DUEL
Cochrane Drives in Gehringer with Game's Lone Run
DETROIT, May 25 (AP) - Vic Sorrell fired a complete game shutout and tied a
major league season high with nine strikeouts as the Detroit Tigers slipped past
the Philadelphia Athletics 1-0 at Navin Field. Sorrell managed to out-duel
A's starter Sugar Cain who held the Tigers to just three hits over eight innings
of work. Cain did walk three batters but two of them were intentional.
Cain retired the first 12 batters he faced but ran into trouble in the
fifth. Charlie Gehringer led off with a base hit and stole second and
Billy Rogell sacrificed Gehringer to third. Fearing a potential big
inning, Philadelphia manager Connie Mack kept his infield back, but Mickey
Cochrane made the move moot by looping a single into left field, scoring
Gehringer with what would prove to be the game's only run. Cain would
allow only one more safety in the entire contest, yielding a one-out double to
Goose Goslin in the sixth. After retiring Gee Walker on a grounder to
short he intentionally walked Gehringer and then set down Rogell on a fly to
center to extinguish the threat.
Sorrell had retired 11 in a row when he surrendered a one-out single to Ed
Coleman in the top of the fifth. After a wild pitch moved Coleman into
scoring position, Sorrell got Eric McNair on a fly ball to right and Pinky
Higgins on a grounder to short to end the inning.
That was the start of a string of 12 in a row retired by Sorrell, who didn't
allow another baserunner until pinch hitter Bing Miller led off the top of the
ninth with a single. Sorrell fanned Rabbit Warstler for his ninth
strikeout of the game but then yielded a single to left off the bat of Doc
Cramer, with Miller advancing to second. With the tying and go-ahead
runners on base, dangerous Bob Johnson came to the plate, but after working
ahead in the count 1-2, Sorrell induced a grounder near the second base
bag. It was claimed by shortstop Rogell who stepped on second and fired to
first baseman Hank Greenberg for a game-ending double play.
Sorrel was methodical with his strikeouts, earning at least one in every inning
other than the first and eighth. Jimmie Fox, among the most dangerous
hitters in the American League, struck out twice, as did Warstler. McNair
and Higgins were the only members of the A's starting lineup to avoid the punch
out.
