SMITH 2-HITS CARDS
O'Doul Homers, Drives in Both Giants Runs
NEW YORK, May 22 (AP) - Al Smith fired a two-hit complete game shutout and Lefty
O'Doul homered and drove in both runs in the New York Giants' 2-0 victory over
the St. Louis Cardinals at the Polo Grounds. Smith, making just his second
start of the season, became the second National League pitcher in the last three
days to toss a two-hit shutout. Ray Benge of the Brooklyn Dodgers
accomplished the feat in a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Ebbets Field on
May 19.
The Giants took a lead they wouldn't surrender in the bottom of the second
inning when Lefty O'Doul picked on the first pitch he saw from Cardinals starter
Paul Dean and ripped his first home run of the season. It was one of very
few mistakes that Dean made on this day as he held New York to six
safeties--O'Doul's homer was the only extra base hit--and walked none in a
complete game effort of his own. Dean also successfully pitched around
three errors committed by St. Louis shortstop Leo Durocher.
The Giants added an insurance run in the sixth. Bill Terry led off with an
infield single and Mel Ott followed by lining a base hit to right-center,
advancing Terry to third. O'Doul's fielder's choice then plated Terry with
the second New York run.
Smith, meanwhile, was mowing down the prolific Cardinals offense. He took
a no-hitter into the fifth before yielding a one-out double to Spud Davis.
After retiring Kiddo Davis on a pop fly to short he gave up his second, and
final, hit of the game on Durocher's swinging bunt. But with runners on
first and third and two outs, Dean rolled out to short to end the threat.
The Cardinals did have one more scoring chance and it occurred in the top of the
eighth. Dean drew a one-out free pass and Smith then walked Burgess
Whitehead, putting runners on first and second. Jack Rothrock was retired
on a routine fly ball to right but a passed ball charged to Spud Davis put the
tying runs in scoring position with two outs. Smith rose to the occasion
and retired Frankie Frisch on a pop fly to Terry at first base to end the inning
and then retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to close out the
game.
New York's starting pitchers have been superb thus far this season, combining
for 21 complete games and four shutouts in 32 starts and amassing a collective
earned run average of 2.35.
