HUBBELL EXTENDS CG STREAK IN OVER CUBS
Giants Eke out Victory Despite 14 LOB
CHICAGO, May 15 (AP) - Carl Hubbell tossed his seventh complete game in as many
starts this season and the New York Giants upended the Chicago Cubs 3-1 at
Wrigley Field. New York roughed up Cubs starter Charlie Root, who was
removed after five innings. Mel Ott and Lefty O'Doul paced the Giants
attack with three hits apiece,; J.J. Moore, Travis Jackson and Hubbell also had
multi-hit games for New York.
The Giants got to Root for a pair of runs in the opening frame. Moore led
off the game with a double to right-center and moved to third on a sacrifice by
Hughie Critz. Bill Terry drew a walk and Mel Ott gave New York the lead
with a base hit to right-center field, scoring Moore and advancing Terry to
third. After O'Doul popped out, Jackson came through with a two-out RBI
single to give the Giants a 2-0 advantage.
New York made it 3-0 in the third. O'Doul opened the inning by spraying a
single to left and advanced to second on Jackson's sacrifice. Blondy Ryan
drew a walk from Root and, following Gus Mancuso's pop fly to second, Hubbell
drew a free pass of his own, loading the bases. Moore then reached on an
infield single, scoring O'Doul. Critz grounded out to second to end the
inning.
Hubbell methodically dispatched the Cubs throughout. Chicago's best
scoring chance early came in the fourth when Kiki Cuyler and Tuck Stainback
lined consecutive two-out singles, but Hubbell extinguished the threat by
inducing Dolph Camilli to fly to left.
It appeared that the Giants left-hander would record his third shutout of the
season when he retired Chuck Klein and Cuyler to open the bottom of the
ninth. But Stainback reached when shortstop Jackson booted his ground ball
for an error. Camilli followed with a double to right, scoring Stainback
with an unearned run. Suddenly the Cubs, who had been thoroughly
outplayed, had the tying run at the plate but Hubbell calmly retired Billy
Jurges on a grounder to short to end the game.
The Giants won despite stranding 14 runners, tying a season-high set just five
days earlier in a 10-7 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman's Park.
