BRIDGES STYMIES NATS WITH 3-HIT SHUTOUT
Whitehill's Effort Goes for Naught

WASHINGTON, May 13 (AP) - Tommy Bridges fired a three-hit complete game shutout as the Detroit Tigers squeezed past the Washington Senators 2-0 at Griffith Stadium.  It was the second three-hit shutout at Griffith in as many days; Tommy Thomas of the Senators blanked the St. Louis Browns on May 12.

Bridges' masterpiece overshadowed a fine effort by Washington's Earl Whitehill, who held the slugging Tigers to two runs on seven hits in a complete game effort of his own.

Detroit took the lead for good in the fourth with a two-out rally off Whitehill.  After Goose Goslin and Gee Walker were retired, Whitehill walked Charlie Gehringer.  Billy Rogell followed with a base hit, advancing Gehringer to third and Hank Greenberg's single to left plated the game's first run.  Ray Hayworth walked to fill the bases before Whitehill retired Marv Owen to avoid further damage.

Bridges was remarkably efficient, allowing only four Senators to reach base.  He retired 17 of the first 19 batters he faced and took a two-hit shutout into the seventh.  The only free pass he issued was to Buddy Myer leading off the seventh inning and this opened up the best--indeed the only--scoring opportunity the Senators would have.  Trailing 1-0 at this point, Heinie Manush sacrificed Myer into scoring position as the potential tying run.  Joe Cronin followed with a grounder up the middle that shortstop Rogell was able to knock down, giving Cronin the infield hit but allowing Myer to advance only as far as third base.  Fred Schulte worked the count to 3-2 and, with Cronin running on the pitch, struck out.  Hayworth's throw to second was in time to cut down Cronin and the strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play retained the Tigers lead.

Walker capped the scoring in the eighth when, with one out, he drilled a Whitehill offering into the left-center field bleachers for his second home run of the season and a 2-0 Tigers lead.

Bridges never allowed another baserunner and Detroit held on for the win.
