SUHR HITS FOR CYCLE IN LOSING CAUSE
Cubs Rap Out 20 Hits to Upend Bucs

PITTSBURGH, May 2 (AP) - Gus Suhr's seventh inning triple completed the cycle but the Pittsburgh Pirates still fell to the Chicago Cubs 9-6 at Forbes Field.  Suhr filled out all four legs of the cycle in his first four plate appearances and drove home three runs in a losing cause.  Lloyd Waner, mired in an 8-for-48 slump entering the contest banged out four hits for Pittsburgh.  Chuck Klein and Dolph Camilli both had four-hit games for the Cubs.

Despite consecutive one-out singles off the bats of Billy Herman, Klein, Babe Herman and Kiki Cuyler, Chicago settled for a single run in the opening frame.  The Pirates answered with three of their own off Cubs starter Lon Warneke.  Lloyd Waner led off with the first of his four hits, advanced to third on a pair of ground balls and scored on Arky Vaughn's base hit.  Suhr then followed with a two-run homer to right-center, giving Pittsburgh a 3-1 lead.

The Pirates added a run in the fourth when Lloyd Waner led off with another base hit, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on Paul Waner's long fly to right and tagged and scored on Freddy Lindstrom's fly to center.

But the Cubs knotted the game in the fourth with three runs off Pittsburgh starter Heinie Meine.  Billy Herman singled with one out and took second on Klein's infield hit.  Babe Herman's sharp single to left filled the bases.  Cuyler rolled into a fielder's choice, forcing Babe Herman at second but allowing Billy Herman to score to cut the Chicago deficit to two runs.  Camilli then erased the margin by lashing a double to right-center, scoring  both baserunners to knot the contest at four runs apiece.

The Pirates came right back with two runs in their half of the fifth inning.  Paul Waner led off with a single and took third on Lindstrom's base hit.  Vaughn struck out but Suhr doubled over the head of Cuyler in center, scoring Waner to make it 5-4.  It became 6-4 when Lindstrom came home on Cookie Lavagetto's ground out.

Undaunted, the Cubs exploded for a decisive five runs in the top of the seventh.  Billy Herman dropped a single into left to open the frame and Klein doubled him to third.  Meine was replaced on the mound by Lloyd Johnson who was immediately greeted by Babe Herman's single to center, scoring Billy Herman and advancing Klein to third.  The lead was now down to a single run.  Cuyler popped up for the first out but Camilli bounced a single into right field, scoring Klein with the tying run and advancing Babe Herman to second.  Billy Jurges doubled to left, plating Babe Herman and chasing Camilli to third.  Gabby Hartnett flied to shallow right for the second out but consecutive infield singles off the bats of the bats of pinch hitter Babe Phelps and Woody English allowed two more runs to score, giving the Cubs a 9-6 lead.

That was the end of the scoring.  Suhr's one-out triple in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Bud Tinning gave the Pirates their best scoring opportunity but Lavagetto struck out and Tommy Thevenow grounded out, leaving Suhr stranded at third.  Tinning went on to toss three scoreless innings to close out the game.
