BRAVES CRUSH PHILS BEHIND 24-HIT ONSLAUGHT
Frankhouse Tosses Shutout; Urbanski, Mowry Star Offensively

PHILADELPHIA, May 1 (AP) - The Boston Braves pounded out 24 hits--including four home runs--to back Fred Frankhouse's five-hit complete game shutout to crush the Philadelphia Phillies 18-0 at the Baker Bowl.  Billy Urbanski banged out five safeties of his own, scored four runs and drove in three.  Joe Mowry had four hits--including his first two home runs of the season--scored three times and drove in four runs.  Every member of the Braves who came to the plate had at least one hit; eight members of the starting lineup scored at least once and seven plated at least one run.

The contest was scoreless after two innings but then Boston began its inevitable destruction of the Phillies when Buck Jordan drove home Shanty Hogan with a base hit and Urbanski scored on Red Worthington's fielder's choice to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.

That advantage tripled in the fourth.  Mowry and Hogan led off with a single and walk respectively and moved to second and third on Frankhouse's sacrifice.  Urbanski's base hit plated Mowry and advanced Hogan to third, putting Boston on top 3-0 and Jordan's base hit to center replicated the baserunner situation while scoring Hogan.  Wally Berger followed with a double to left-center, scoring Urbanski and leaving runners on second and third and ended the day for Philadelphia starter Snipe Hansen.  He was replaced on the mound by Phil Collins who yielded a long fly to center off the bat of Red Worthington.  Ethan Allen made the grab but Jordan tagged and scored easily to give the Braves a 6-0 lead.

Mowry's first home run of the game made it 8-0 when he followed Marty McManus' lead-off single in the fifth with a shot just inside the right field foul pole and Boston upped the lead to 10-0 in the sixth on Mowry's RBI single and Hogan's run-scoring fielder's choice grounder.

The Braves put an end to any doubt about the contest's outcome with an eight-run seventh inning, a frame that featured three home runs.  Facing Phillies reliever Reggie Grabowski, Urbanski, Jordan and Berger lashed consecutive singles to start the frame, scoring one run and leaving runners on the corners.  Worthington's grounder forced Berger at second but Jordan scored on the play to make the score 12-0.  Pinky Whitney followed with a single to center, putting runners on first and second and McManus cracked a home run into the seats in left for a 15-0 lead.  Mowry followed that with a drive of his own into the left field grandstand.  Hogan flied out but Frankhouse doubled and Urbanski capped the inning with a three-run blast to give Boston an 18-0 lead.  It was the first time this year a National League team had homered three times in a single inning.

Frankhouse held the Phillies to just five hits--all of them singles--and was aided by five double play balls turned by his infield, most by a team in a single game this year to date.  It comes just one day after Philadelphia turned four double plays in an 11-8 victory over Boston.

The game represents the second thrashing of the Philadelphia pitching staff at home in three days.  The Brooklyn Dodgers administered a 21-12 pummeling of the Phillies on April 29.  The 24 hits amassed by the Braves is the high water mark in a major league game thus far this season.
