DIZZY DAZZLES REDS ON 1 DAY OF REST
Right-Hander Now 4-0; Cincy Drops 8th Straight
ST. LOUIS, Apr. 30 (AP) - Just two days after firing a complete game
victory over the Chicago Cubs Dizzy Dean was back at it, tossing his fourth
complete game in as many starts as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the
Cincinnati Reds 8-3 at Sportsman's Park. The loss was the eighth in a row
for the Reds.
Cincinnati drew first blood, pushing a run across against Dean in the top of the
third. Ivey Shiver led off with a base hit, stole second and advanced to
third on Bob O'Farrell's sacrifice. Paul Derringer's single brought Shiver
home to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.
But the Cardinals responded immediately in their half of the same inning.
With one out, Jack Rothrock banged out the first of his four hits--an infield
single. Frankie Frisch singled Rorthrock to second and, after Joe Medwick
popped to second, Ripper Collins cracked a double off the right field wall,
scoring both runners and giving St. Louis a 2-1 advantage.
The Reds tied the game in the top of the fourth when Jim Bottomley doubled to
lead off the inning and scored one out later on Mark Koenig's base hit.
But the Cardinals seized control in the bottom of the frame. Buster Mills
led off with a single but was eliminated on Leo Durocher's double play
grounder. Just when it seemed that Derringer would hold St. Louis
scoreless, Dean singled and advanced to second when Pepper Martin drew a
walk. Rothrock followed with the big blow, a home run down the right field
line, to give St. Louis a 5-2 lead.
That seemed to be all that Dean needed. The Reds did nick him for one more
run in the sixth when Tony Piet drew a two-out walk and scored on Shiver's
double, but Dean was otherwise unflappable.
The Cardinals broke the game open with two runs in the sixth. Rothrock
doubled to left with one out and scored on Frisch's base hit to
left-center. Medwick doubled high off the left field wall, chasing Frisch
to third, and, after Collins was intentionally walked, Spud Davis lifted a fly
to left, scoring Frisch to give St. Louis a 7-3 lead. The Cardinals capped
the scoring when Rothrock's two-out single scored Durocher, who had reached on
an infield hit.
The victory is the third in a row for the Cardinals who have won eight of their
last ten contests.
