WARNEKE, CUBS COOL CARDS BATS
4-Run 2nd Provides All Scoring
CHICAGO, Apr. 27 (AP) - Lon Warneke turned in a masterful two-hit shutout,
leading the Chicago Cubs to their fourth straight win, a 4-0 whitewash of the
St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. The loss snapped a five-game St.
Louis winning streak.
Warneke was brilliant, retiring the first 14 batters he faced before
surrendering a two-out single to Spud Davis in the fifth inning. Left
fielder Chuck Klein was charged with an error on the play, allowing Davis to
advance to second. But Warneke retired Buster Mills on a routine fly to
center to end the inning. Warneke then retired the next 12 Cardinals
hitters before yielding a two-out ninth inning double to Joe Medwick before
closing the game by inducing Jack Rothrock to ground out to Woody English at
third base. The Davis single and the Medwick double were the only two
baserunners the Cardinals managed in the entire contest. It was the first
time this season that St. Louis had scored fewer than three runs in a game.
The Cubs did all of their damage against Cardinals starter Tex Carleton in the
second inning. Tuck Stainback led off with a single to left and Charlie
Grimm followed with a double into the left field corner, leaving runners at
second and third. Bill Jurges followed with a two-bagger to left of his
own, scoring Stainback and Grimm for a 2-0 Chicago lead. Gabby Hartnett
then singled to center, scoring Jurges to make it 3-0 and, after Warneke
sacrificed Hartnett into scoring position, English advanced the runner to third
with a sharp single to center field. After Billy Herman popped up for the
second out, Klein bounced a single through the box, plating Hartnett with the
fourth run of the frame. Babe Herman flied to center to end the inning but
the damage had been done.
Carleton settled down after the second, allowing just two meaningless hits and
issuing one walk in his remaining six innings of work but his teammates never
showed any sign of getting back in the game.
Warneke records his second shutout in three starts thus far this year. He
blanked the Cincinnati Reds, also by a 4-0 score, on opening day.
