YANKS CONTINUE STREAK WITH THRASHING OF A'S
8th Straight Win for NY; 9th Straight Loss for PHI

NEW YORK, Apr. 26 (AP) - Two teams opening the season in very different circumstances continued their trends.  The New York Yankees improved to 8-0 on the young season, hitting five home runs in a 21-5 pounding of the Philadelphia Athletics at Yankee Stadium.  With the loss the A's fell to 0-9 on the year.  Babe Ruth belted a pair of long balls and was joined by Tony Lazzeri, Lou Gehrig and Myril Hoag, each of whom hit one for New York.  Johnny Allen (1-0) was the beneficiary of this embarrassment of offensive riches.

The Yankees scored first, pushing a run across in the bottom of the opening frame when Ruth hit the first of his two home runs into the lower right field grandstand.

New York then effectively put the game away in the bottom of the third with an eight-run outburst.  Allen drew a lead-off walk from A's starter Roy Mahaffey and scored when Frank Crosetti tripled.  Earl Combs followed with a double to make it 3-0.  A two-base error charged to Eric McNair allowed Ruth to reach and Combs to score, giving New York a 4-0 lead.  Consecutive singles by Gehrig, Ben Chapman, Lazzeri and Bill Dickey plated three more runs and ended Mahaffey's day.  He was replaced on the mound by Harry Matusek and he was greeted by Don Heffner's two-run double, which put the Yankees on top 9-0.

Bob Johnson's two-run home run in the top of the fourth put the A's on the board and McNair's RBI triple in the sixth cut the lead to 9-3 but the Yankees scored four more times in the bottom of the sixth.  Ruth cracked a three-run home run following consecutive singles by Crosetti and Combs and Dickey's RBI single plated Gehrig to make the score 13-3.

Gehrig, Lazzeri and Dickey all brought home runs in the seventh to up the New York advantage to 16-3.  After Pinky Higgins' two-run double brought Philadelphia to within 11 runs  in the top of the eighth, the Yankees plated five more runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Hoag, who had come in for defense in the blow out in the eighth, belted a three-run homer and was immediately followed by Gehrig's round-tripper.  One out later, Lazzeri's homer finally capped the scoring.

Following an off-day for both clubs, the Yankees will try to continue their wining streak when they host the Red Sox.  The A's will look for their first win when they travel to Washington to play the Senators.
