BABE HERMAN DAZZLES OPENING DAY CROWD WITH 3 HRS
Cubs Pound Reds for 14 Runs, 18 Hits
CHICAGO, Apr. 24 (AP) - Babe Herman belted three home runs to lead the Chicago
Cubs to a 14-4 rout of the Cincinnati Reds at the home opener at Wrigley
Field. Guy Bush went the distance for the Cubs to improve to 2-0.
Chicago bashed out 18 hits, the club's top mark thus far this season.
Herman is the first major leaguer to hit multiple home runs in a single game
this year.
The Cubs effectively put the game to bed in the first two innings, running up a
7-0 lead. Facing Reds right-hander Dazzy Vance, the first five Chicago
batters all reached base safely and gave the club a 4-0 advantage. Woody
English led off with a double and moved to third on Billy Herman's base
hit. Chuck Klein then tripled both runners home and it was 2-0. Babe
Herman followed with his first home run of the contest, into the right-center
field bleachers, to up the advantage to 4-0. Tuck Stainback then singled
and stole second before Charlie Grimm finally made the first out of the inning
by grounding to short. Billy Jurges flied to right, advancing Stainback to
third and Gabby Hartnett drove in the inning's fifth run with a single to center
before Bush mercifully ended the frame by striking out.
The Cubs added two more runs in the second when Klein drew a four-pitch, two-out
walk and Herman cracked his second long ball of the game. This one landed
on the right field catwalk and Chicago now held a 7-0 lead.
The Reds tried to get back in the game, scoring three times off Bush in the
third. Adam Comorosky led off with a base hit and Mark Koenig singled him
to third. Tony Piet's fielder's choice grounder recorded the first out of
the inning, but Comorosky scored to make it 7-1. Chick Hafey followed with
a home run into the left field bleachers to cut the deficit to 7-3.
But that was as close the Reds would get. The Cubs scored six runs on five
hits in the bottom of the sixth, capped by Jurges' three-run home run. The
Reds got one run back on Koenig's home run leading off the seventh and Herman
capped the scoring when he belted his third homer, leading off the bottom of the
eighth against reliever Sy Johnson.
The 14-run outburt marks the first time this season that the Cubs have tallied
more than five runs in a game.
