FRENCH KEEPS REDS BATS ICE COLD
Bucs Win 2nd Straight After 0-3 Start

CINCINNATI, Apr. 22 (AP) - Larry French fired a three-hit complete game shutout and the Pittsburgh Pirates stifled the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 at Crosley Field.  The Reds, who fell to 1-4 on the young season, have now been held to five runs in five games.  Cincinnati has already been shutout twice this year.

The Pirates took a lead they would never surrender in the second.  Arky Vaughn drew a lead-off walk from Reds starter Si Johnson and Gus Suhr followed with a triple off the right-center field wall.  Suhr scored on Cookie Lavagetto's slow roller to short, giving Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead.

An insurance run was added in the top of the third.  Lloyd Waner led off with a single and, after both Fred Lindstrom and Paul Waner popped out, Vaughn crushed a triple to the left-center field gap, scoring Lloyd Waner to give the Pirates a 3-0 advantage.

Johnson kept Pittsburgh at bay from that point, allowing just two harmless singles and retiring the final 11 Pirates he faced before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Jim Lindsey came on in relief to pitch the ninth and set the Pirates down in order.

But French completely subdued the Cincinnati bats throughout the contest.  After Adam Comorosky singled to open the bottom of the first, French retired 16 consecutive Reds before Johnson reached with one out in the sixth when Vaughn made a bad throw to first on a ground ball.  French then retired another seven straight hitters before yielding Gordon's Slade's bloop single to center with two outs in the eighth.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Mark Koenig recorded the third Reds hit of the contest when he reached on an infield single.  But French struck out pinch hitter Jake Flowers and retired Chick Hafey on a grounder to short to end the game.
