Haas Breaks Up Scoreless Game in 9th
CHICAGO, Apr. 22 (AP) - An epic pitchers duel went the way of George Earnshaw
and the Chicago White Sox who squeaked past Jim Weaver and the St. Louis Browns
in a 1-0 victory at Comiskey Park. A one-out single off the bat of Mule
Haas in the bottom of the ninth inning plated pinch runner Sad Sam Jones with
the game's only run. Earnshaw was credited with a two-hit complete game
victory in his season's debut as a starter and fanned eight, matching the high
mark in the major leagues this year initially set by Curt Davis of the
Philadelphia Phillies in a win over the Brooklyn Dodgers one day earlier.
Weaver took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before yielding an infield hit
to Haas. The second White Sox safety didn't come until the game-winning
rally in the ninth. Weaver did struggle with his control, walking seven
Chicago batters. Earnshaw issued three free passes, so both pitchers
surrendered more walks than hits.
The best St. Louis scoring chance came in the fourth inning when George
Puccinelli drew a base on balls to open the frame and, one out later, advanced
to second on Ski Melillo's base hit to center. Frank Grube's fly ball
moved Puccinelli to third but Alan Strange popped out to end the inning.
Melillo's single in the fourth was the last baserunner allowed by Earnshaw in
the game. The right-hander retired the final 17 Browns batters he faced.
Weaver's wildness was mitigated by the defense of his infield; St. Louis turned
three double plays in the first four innings. But Weaver didn't allow a
baserunner beyond first base until the seventh inning. With two outs,
Browns third baseman Harlond Clift misplayed Luke Appling's grounder for an
error and Haas followed with the infield single representing the first Chicago
hit of the game, with Appling advancing to second. But Weaver retired Merv
Shea on an infield pop to end the threat.
In the bottom of the ninth, Zeke Bonura led off with a double to
right-center. It was the only extra base hit of the contest. Jones
was summoned to run for the slow-footed Bonura. Weaver walked Al Simmons
on a 3-2 pitch to put runners on first and second. Appling dropped down a
sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to second and third, and Haas then came
through by lining a single through the shortstop hole into left field, scoring
Jones to win the game for the White Sox.
