A'S CHARGED WITH 7 ERRORS, FALL TO NATS
5 Unearned Runs Lead to 1st Washington 'W'

PHILADELPHIA, Apr. 20 (AP) - Seven Philadelphia errors led to five unearned runs and the Washington Senators went on to defeat the Athletics 8-5 at Shibe Park.  It was the first victory of the season for the Senators; the A's have yet to win.  Philadelphia shortstop Eric McNair was charged with three miscues; the other four errors were divided among four different players.

The Senators took the lead in the top of the second inning, with A's errors playing a prominent role.  Joe Kuhel opened with a single off Philadelphia starter Johnny Marcum and moved to second on a ground out off the bat of Ossie Bluege.  Moe Berg's roller advanced Kuhel to third with two outs and that's when the hijinks began.  Monte Weaver bounced a routine grounder to McNair who fumbled it for an error, allowing Kuhel to score the game's first run.  Buddy Myer followed with a base hit to right, advancing Weaver to third.  John Stone then tapped another grounder to McNair who again kicked the ball for a second error, allowing Marcum to score, giving Washington a 2-0 lead.  Heinie Manush flied to right to end the inning.

The A's got both runs back, one in the bottom of the second and the other in the third.  Bob Johnson belted a Weaver offering into the left field stands for his first home run of the year with two outs in the second to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the third, also with two outs, Rabbit Warstler doubled to left and Doc Cramer grounded a triple into the right field corner to tie the game.

The Senators broke the tie in the fifth and, once again, shoddy Philadelphia defense was a key factor.  Joe Cronin's swinging bunt to open the frame was mishandled by catcher Frankie Hayes for an error.  Two outs later, Bluege drew a four-pitch walk, putting runners on first and second.  Berg then doubled to left, scoring Cronin and chasing Bluege to third.  Weaver reached when third baseman Pinky Higgins booted his grounder, allowing Bluege to score the second run of the inning.  Buddy Myer flied out to end the inning, but two runs had scored to give Washington a 4-2 lead.  At this point, all four Washington runs were unearned.

Pinky Higgins' home run leading off the bottom of the fifth drew the A's to within a run and the score remained 4-3 into the ninth.

In the top of the ninth, Manush walked and Cronin's base hit to right put runners on first and third with no outs.  Fred Schulte followed with a triple to left-center, giving Washington a 6-3 lead and Kuhel then walked, leaving runners on first and third.  Sugar Cain replaced Marcum on the mound and retired Bluege on a shallow fly to center for the first out but Berg reached on an infield single, scoring Schulte to make it 7-3 while advancing Kuhel to second.  Weaver sacrificed the runners to second and third and Myer lifted a fly ball to shallow left that was botched by Johnson.  The error allowed Kuhel to score while Berg stopped at third.  Stone grounded to third, but the Senators now led 8-3.

The A's scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth but it was too little, too late.  Marcum becomes the first pitcher in the major leagues thus far this season to suffer a second defeat.
