ROWE DAZZLES CHISOX AS BENGALS TAKE RUBBER GAME
Gehringer, Owen Go Deep for Detroit
CHICAGO, Apr. 19 (AP) - One day after suffering the defeat in a wild 10-9 loss,
Schoolboy Rowe baffled Chicago batters, leading the Detroit Tigers past the
White Sox 8-2 at Comiskey Park. The victory enabled the Tigers to win the
opening series of the season, two games to one. After a shaky beginning,
Rowe settled down and, at one point, retired 20 consecutive Chicago batters.
Detroit grabbed a lead in the top of the first. Facing White Sox starter
Phil Gallivan, Billy Rogell led off with a single and advanced to third on
Charlie Gehringer's double. Mickey Cochrane followed with a single to
center, scoring Rogell with the first run of the contest and advancing Gehringer
to third. Goose Goslin's fly to right then scored Gehringer to put the
Tigers on top 2-0.
But the White Sox immediately tied the game in their half of the opening
frame. Evar Swanson and Jackie Hayes led off with back-to-back singles,
putting runners on first and second, and after Zeke Bonura popped out, Al
Simmons doubled off the left field wall, scoring Swanson and chasing Hayes to
third. Luke Appling's soft grounder then brought home Hayes to knot the
score at two. From that point on, Rowe got his act together and then
some. The next Chicago player to reach base was Mule Haas, whose harmless
two-out single came in the bottom of the seventh.
The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the second. Marv Owen drew a
lead-off walk and, two outs later, Gehringer ripped a line shot into the lower
seats in right field for a 4-2 Detroit bulge. Another run was added in the
fifth when Cochrane and Goslin lined back-to-back singles to start the inning
and Gee Walker reached on Gallivan's error to fill the bases. Hank
Greenberg's fly to right was deep enough to score Cochrane, putting the Tigers
on top 5-2.
Three more Detroit runs capped the scoring in the seventh. Goslin led off
with a double but was then thrown out at third on Walker's failed sacrifice bunt
attempt. But Walker stole second base and scored on
Greenberg's base hit. After Frank Doljack flied out, Walker took third on
a wild pitch and then trotted home when Owen jacked a Gallivan offering into the
left field seats to put the Tiges ahead 8-2.
It was more than enough for Rowe. After the first inning the Detroit
right-hander allowed only three baserunners. The only threat came in the
eighth when pinch hitter Red Kress drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on
Swanson's single. Rowe, however, induced a double play grounder off the
bat of Hayes to snuff out the threat and end the game.
