HALLAHAN FIRES CARDS'S 2ND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT
Season-Opening Series Sweep of Bucs Completed

ST. LOUIS, Apr. 19 (AP) - Bill Hallahan followed Paul Dean's shutout with one of his own, tossing a six-hit complete game as the St. Louis Cardinals polished off a series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 5-0 victory at Sportsman's Park.  Pepper Martin banged out three hits and Joe Medwick belted a three-run home run in support of Hallahan's gem.  The Cardinals laid waste to the Pirates in this season-opening series, outscoring Pittsburgh 21-6 over three games.

St. Louis jumped out to an early lead against Pirates starter Ralph Birkofer.  Kiddo Davis drew a lead-off walk, stole second, advanced to third on Frankie Frisch's ground out to second and scored on Martin's double to left.

In the third, the Cardinals broke the game open.  With two outs, Martin singled and advanced to second on Jack Rothrock's infield hit.  Medwick then drilled his first home run of the young season well up into the left-center field bleachers for a 4-0 St. Louis advantage.

The Cardinals capped the scoring in the sixth when Ripper Collins drew a one-out walk from Birkhofer and then scored when Spud Davis tripled to right-center.

Hallahan, meanwhile, was mostly keeping the Pirates off base and, when he wasn't, relied on his defense.  The Cardinals infield turned three double plays in the game.  In the second innings, after Arky Vaughn and Gus Suhr banged out consecutive one-out singles, Hallahan induced Cookie Lavagetto to bounce into an inning-ending twin killing.  Lavagetto followed Suhr's one-out fifth inning walk with another double play grounder and Vaughn did the honors in the seventh after Pie Traynor singled with one out.

The Pirates had one last chance to get back in the game in the top of the ninth.  Fred Lindstrom singled with one out and Paul Waner followed by drawing a walk.  But Traynor hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Waner at second, and Vaughn ended the contest by bouncing to Frisch at second.

After an off-day, the Cardinals will continue their season-opening homestand by hosting the Chicago Cubs for three games.  The Pirates will move on to Cincinnati to take on the Reds for a brief two-game series at Crosley Field.
