DAFFY'S 3-HITTER MAKES DEANS 2-0
6 Extra Base Hits Pace Cards 'O'
ST. LOUIS, Apr. 18 (AP) - A day after Dizzy Dean tossed a complete game to help
the St. Louis Cardinals win their opener, brother Paul more than matched
him. "Daffy" Dean fired a 3-hit complete game as the Cardinals
bested the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 at Sportsman's Park. Fred Lindstrom's
one-out solo home run in the top of the first was the only thing separating Dean
from a shutout. Kiddo Davis and Ripper Collins both belted home runs for
the home team, part of a six-extra-base hit attack by the Cardinals bats.
After Lindstrom put the Pirates on top, St. Louis took the lead for good in the
bottom of the third. With two outs, Dean helped himself with a base hit
and Davis followed with a line drive into the left field pavilion off Pirates
starter Larry French to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.
St. Louis added single runs in the fourth and fifth. Pepper Martin and Joe
Medwick reached on errors, putting runners on first and second with one out and,
after Collins flied to deep left and advanced Martin to third, Spud Davis rolled
a single into left field to score Martin with the third Cardinals run. In
the fifth, Davis doubled--the second of his three extra base hits in the
contest--with one out and, after Frankie Frisch grounded to short, Martin laced
a triple into the left field corner, scoring Davis to put the Cardinals on top
4-1.
In the eighth, with two outs and the bases empty, Collins launched a mammoth
drive to left that just missed the pavilion roof, giving St. Louis a 5-1
advantage.
Dean, meanwhile, was cruising. After the Lindstrom home run, Dean retired
10 of the next 11 batters he faced; the lone exception was Gus Suhr, who reached
on an error charged to Martin with one out in the second but was immediately
eliminated when Cookie Lavagetto bounced into an inning-ending double
play. Arky Vaughn drew a lead-off walk in the fifth, but never advanced
past first base. In fact, after the home run, no Pittsburgh baserunner
ever reached second base.
The second Pirates hit didn't come until one out in the seventh when Pie Traynor
singled, but he too was eliminated by a double play ball, this one off the bat
of Vaughn. Suhr drew another base on balls, to no effect, in the
eighth. Lindstrom was the final Pittsburgh batter to reach base when he
singled with one out in the ninth.
The two clubs will meet again tomorrow when the Pirates will try to avoid being
swept.
