DANNING'S PH 2-RUN HR MAKES WINNER OF HUBBELL
Giants Take Opener in Dramatic Fashion

NEW YORK, Apr. 17 (AP) - Harry Danning's pinch hit two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth gave the New York Giants a come-from-behind 4-3 win in the club's home opener at the Polo Grounds.  The dramatic long ball, off Philadelphia Phillies reliever Snipe Hansen, made a winner of Giants starter Carl Hubbell, who tossed a complete game, allowing only one earned run.

The Phillies took an early lead.  They pushed an unearned run across in the second when Wes Schulmerich reached on a one-out single, advanced to second an out later on Jimmie Wilson's single and then moved to third when Irv Jeffries lined a sharp base hit to left.  But when J.J. Moore misplayed the hit, Schulmerich scored on the error.  Hubbell struck out Jumbo Elliott to end the inning, but Philadelphia had a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was doubled in the third.  Dick Bartell's hustle double opened the frame and, one out later, he scored on Ethan Allen's base hit through the box.

The Giants got on the board in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally.  Blondy Ryan battled for 10 pitches before drawing a free pass from Elliott and Bill Terry followed with a walk  of his own.  Mel Ott then slashed a single to left, plating Ryan and chasing Terry to third.  Travis Jackson drew Elliott's third walk of the inning but George Watkins bounced to short, ending the inning with New York trailing 2-1.

The Giants evened the score in the fifth.  Terry singled with one out and Ott's double into the right field corner put runners on second and third.  Jackson was hit by a pitch, filling the bases and Elliott walked Watkins, forcing in the tying run.  At that point, Hansen replaced Elliott and he induced a double play ball off the bat of Johnny Vergez to keep the score knotted at two.

The Philles recaptured the lead in the sixth when Lou Chiozza reached to open the frame on Ryan's error.  Allen then drew a walk, putting runners on first and second with none out.  Don Hurst followed by lining out to center; Chiozza tried to advance to third and appeared to beat Watkins' throw but he overslid the bag and was called out.  But Schulmerich bounced a single up the middle and when Chick Fullis blooped a base hit to center, Allen raced around to score the lead run.

Philadelphia took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning.  With one out, Watkins reached when Jeffries booted a grounder for an error.  Vergez rolled out to first with Watkins advancing to second.  Danning then pinch hit for Paul Richards and drove a 1-2 offering deep into the lower grandstand in left field, just inside the foul pole, for a two-run home run and a 4-3 Giants lead.  Both runs were unearned.

Hubbell retired pinch hitter Mickey Haslin and Bartell to open the ninth, but then walked pinch hitter Al Todd and yielded a single to Allen.  That brought Hurst to the plate and he bounced one to Ryan at second who completed the play to end the game.
