Game 1, at Navin Field:  D. Dean vs. Crowder

AFTER BIG 1ST INNINGS, CARDS HANG ON FOR GAME 1 'W'
Redbirds Ride 18-Hit Attack; Walker Comes Up Big in Relief

DETROIT, Oct. 3 (AP) - A five-run first inning forged what was ultimately an insurmountable lead as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-6 in Game 1 of the World Series before a sellout crowd at Navin Field.  The Cardinals battered a quartet of Tigers pitchers for 18 hits, led by Leo Durocher (4), Frankie Frisch (3) and Ripper Collins (3).  Although St. Louis starter Dizzy Dean wasn't sharp, he still picked up the win.  General Crowder absorbed the defeat for Detroit.  Bill Walker was the unsung hero for the Cardinals, allowing just a single unearned run in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

St. Louis surged to a large early lead, plating five runs in the top of the first inning.  Pepper Martin and Jack Rothrock opened the game with back-to-back singles and Frisch's double into the right field corner gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead while putting runners on second and third with no outs.  Joe Medwick fanned but Ripper Collins singled to right, scoring two more runs.  Bill DeLancey then provided the coup de grace with a home run into the right field seats to provide St. Louis with a 5-0 lead.

The Tigers made clear in the bottom of the inning that they weren't going to fold.  Jo-Jo White led off with an infield single and was forced at second on Mickey Cochrane's fielder's choice grounder.  Charlie Gehringer reached on another infield hit, putting runners on first and second with one out and Hank Greenberg followed with a base hit to center, scoring Cochrane and advancing Gehringer to second.  Goose Goslin popped out but Billy Rogell's single scored Gehringer and Detroit had cut the deficit to 5-2.

The Tigers drew within a run in the third.  Cochrane led off with a walk and Gehringer's single to left put runners on first and second.  Dean then hit Greenberg with a pitch, filling the bases.  Goslin hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Greenberg at second, but Cochrane scored to make it 5-3.  Rogell then doubled to right-center, scoring Gehringer and chasing Greenberg to third.  The go-ahead run was now in scoring position with only one out.  But Dean came up big, striking out Marv Owen before issuing an intentional free pass to Pete Fox.  He then got Crowder on a grounder to second to end the inning.

That was as close as Detroit would come to drawing even.  The Cardinals erupted for three more runs in the top of the fourth, ending Crowder's day in the process.  Ernie Orsatti led off with a single to right-center and Durocher's base hit put runners on the corners with no outs.  Dean then helped himself, doubling down the right field line, scoring Orsatti and sending Durocher to third.  Crowder was replaced by Firpo Marberry but Martin greeted him with a base hit to left-center, plating both runners and giving the Cardinals an 8-4 lead.

Detroit got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on Goslin's solo home run but still trailed by three entering the bottom of the sixth.  Dean retired Cochrane and Gehringer on grounders to open the frame but Greenberg lined a shot off Durocher's glove on an 0-2 pitch for a single and Goslin followed with a base on balls.  With Dean clearly tiring on just two days rest, Frisch summoned Walker from the bullpen and he yielded a base hit to right off Rogell.  Greenberg tried to score on the play but, in a huge moment in the game, Rothrock gunned him down at the plate to end the inning with the 8-5 lead still intact.

An unearned run brought the Tigers within two in the eighth.  Cochrane led off by reaching on Martin's error and was forced at second on Gehringer's fielder's choice grounder.  Greenberg's double to right moved Gehringer to third and Goslin's fly out to right brought him home.  Rogell popped to second to end the inning but the score was now 8-6.

The Cardinals scored a big insurance run in the top of the ninth when Frisch led off with a base hit and advanced to third one out later on Collins' double to right.  DeLancey was walked intentionally to load the bases and reliever Vic Sorrell got the ground ball he was looking for off the bat of Chick Fullis but it was hit too slowly to turn two.  The Tigers got the force at second but Frisch scored to make it 9-6.  Durocher's fly to right--the only time he was retired in the game--ended the inning.

Walker closed out the game by retiring Owen, Fox and pinch hitter Ray Hayworth in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Detroit will look to even things up in Game 2 when Schoolboy Rowe takes the hill to oppose Bill Hallahan.

Game 2, at Navin Field:  Hallahan vs. Rowe

CARDS OUTLAST BENGALS IN WILD GAME 2
Martin's HR in 13th is Game-Winner

DETROIT, Oct. 4 (AP) - Pepper Martin's lead-off home run in the top of the 13th inning snapped an 8-8 tie as the St. Louis Cardinals prevailed in a madcap World Series Game 2 over the Detroit Tigers at Navin Field.  The Cardinals saw a six-run eighth inning lead disappear in the blink of an eye and both teams had opportunities to win the game before Martin's heroics finally brought the contest to a close deep into extra innings.  Each club was beyond shaky on defense; the teams combined to commit eight errors--four apiece--leading to six unearned runs.  Only once during the 1232-game major league regular season did two teams combine for that many errors in a single game.  To add insult to injury, the teams are forced to board a train to St. Louis, where they will meet tomorrow afternoon at Sportsman's Park for Game 3.

The first six innings of the contest had all the trappings of a tight, low-scoring affair.  The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Joe Medwick tripled with one out off Schoolboy Rowe and scored on Ripper Collins' deep fly to center.  The Tigers took their first lead of the Series in the bottom of the fifth when Pete Fox drew a lead-off walk from Bill Hallahan, stole second and scored when Rowe roped a double into the left field corner.  Jo-Jo White sacrificed the runner to third and Detroit moved on top when Mickey Cochrane rolled a ball back to the mound that Hallahan misplayed for an error.  Rowe scored on the play and the Tigers led 2-1.

That was the score when the game moved to the top of the seventh and changed character entirely.  The Cardinals rallied for five runs to seemingly seize control of the contest.  The first three batters of the inning all reached safely.  Collins grounded a single through the box and advanced to third on Bill DeLancey's base hit to  left-center.  Ernie Orsatti's sharp grounder was knocked down by second baseman Charlie Gehringer, but the infield hit scored Collins to tie the game and advanced DeLancey to second.  Leo Durocher hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Orsatti at second for the first out while DeLancey moved to third.  Rowe then, crucially, walked Hallahan to load the bases.  Martin struck out and Rowe appeared as though he might wiggle out of further trouble but Jack Rothrock singled to left, scoring DeLancey to give the Cardinals the lead and everyone moved up another base--including Durocher scoring--when Goose Goslin misplayed the ball for an error.  Frankie Frisch then singled to left and Goslin kicked the ball again, allowing two runs to score.  Before the dust had finally settled, the Cardinals owned a 6-2 lead.

After Hallahan held the Tigers scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals appeared to put the game away in the top of the eighth.  DeLancey walked with one out and Orsatti singled to center, with DeLancey advancing to second.  Durocher then hit a tailor-made double play ball to third baseman Marv Owen whose throw to second was in the dirt, pulling Gehringer off the bag.  Instead of the inning being over the bases were loaded with one out.  Hallahan appeared to drive the dagger home by singling to center, scoring two runs to give St. Louis an 8-2 lead.  Rowe, visibly frustrated, was pulled for Firpo Marberry who retired the final two batters of the inning.

Just when the Tigers appeared dead in the water, the bottom of the eighth happened.  Goslin led off with a double to right and moved to third on Billy Rogell's ground out.  Owen then bounced a routine grounder to Martin at third who let the ball go right through his legs for an error, with Goslin scoring on the play to make it 8-3.  Fox then tapped a ball back to Hallahan.  With an inning-ending double play in his clutches, Hallahan fired the ball into center field for another error.  Owen moved to third on the play.  Manager Frisch then removed Hallahan from the game in favor of Jesse Haines but things continued to spiral out of control.  Pinch hitter Gee Walker singled to center, scoring Owen and advancing Fox to second.  White followed with another base hit, scoring Fox and moving Walker to second.  The score was now 8-5 and the tying run was coming to the plate.  Frisch acted again, bringing lefty Jim Mooney into the game in place of Haines.  But Mooney walked Cochrane to load the bases and Gehringer followed by lining a single to center.  Two more runs scored and it was now 8-7, with runners on first and second and still only one out.  For the third time in the frame, Frisch went to the bullpen, this time summoning Dazzy Vance to the mound.  He finally got the second out, retiring Hank Greenberg on a fly to right, with Cochrane taking third.  Goslin then completed the comeback with his second hit of the inning, a line single to left-center scoring Cochrane to tie the game.  Rogell followed with what looked like a single to right but Rothrock made a diving catch of his sinking liner to finally end the inning.

Elden Auker came on for Detroit in the top of the ninth and set the Cardinals down in order.  Vance replicated the feat for St. Louis in the bottom of the frame.

Auker pitched around an error by Fox to keep the Cardinals off the board in the tenth.  Bill Walker came on for St. Louis and retired the Tigers in order in the bottom half.  Frisch drew a one-out walk in the top of the 11th but was erased on a Medwick double play grounder.

The Tigers appeared to have the game won in the bottom of the 11th.  Greenberg led off with a booming double that rattled off the right-center field fence and was sacrificed to third by Goslin.  Rogell came to the plate and hit a scorching line drive that seemed ticketed for the left field corner but Martin made a lunging snag of it and doubled off the startled Greenberg to end the inning and send the game on to the 12th.

The Cardinals came within a whisker of taking the lead in the top of the 12th.  With Auker still on the mound, Collins drew a lead-off walk and, after DeLancey struck out, a free pass to Orsatti put runners on first and second.  Durocher then grounded a single through the middle.  Collins tried to score but White fired a strike to Cochrane to nail Collins at the plate for the second out.  Pinch hitter Chick Fullis then grounded out to end the threat.

In the bottom of the inning, Fox drew a one-out walk from Tex Carleton and stole second--his second steal of the contest.  But Carleton struck out pinch hitter Frank Doljack and got White on a grounder to first to end the inning.

In the 13th, with Carl Fischer now pitching for Detroit, Martin worked the count to 3-1 and then unloaded on a Fischer fastball, driving it far over the left field wall for a home run and a 9-8 St. Louis lead.  The Cardinals then loaded the bases with two outs but Fischer got Orsatti on a grounder to short to end the inning.

Carleton retired Cochrane and Gehringer on ground balls to open the bottom of the frame but Greenberg kept the inning alive by lacing a double just inside the left field foul line.  That brought Goslin to the plate representing the potential wining run.  But on the very first pitch he grounded routinely to Frisch at second who threw him out to give the Cardinals the win.

St. Louis now holds a 2-0 lead heading home to Sportsman's Park.  The Tigers have their backs to the wall and will send Tommy Bridges to the mound to face Paul Dean in Game 3.

Game 3, at Sportsman's Park:  Bridges vs. P. Dean

CARDS ROLL ON, POUND TIGERS TO TAKE 3-0 SERIES LEAD
20-Hit Attack; Bridges Driven from Mound in 2nd Inning

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 5 (AP) - The offensive machine that has been the St. Louis Cardinals in this World Series rolled on in Game 3 with a crushing 14-4 win over the Detroit Tigers before a delirious sellout crowd at Sportsman's Park.  The Cardinals put the game away early with an eight-run second inning, knocking Tigers starter Tommy Bridges out of the game.  St. Louis led 12-0 before Detroit ever got on the board.  Cardinals starter Paul Dean put forth a workman-like effort, fighting control problems to post the first complete game of the Series.  St. Louis now holds a commanding three games to none lead.

The Cardinals are currently hitting .383 as a team in the Series and have scored 31 runs in three games.  When Ernie Orsatti singled in the fourth inning, every member of the St. Louis lineup had accrued at least one hit in the game and by the time the contest was over eight of the nine starters, including Orsatti, had compiled multi-hit efforts.

Coming off a four-error performance in Game 2, another Detroit miscue led to the first run of the game, in the bottom of the first.  Pepper Martin reached to open the inning when his third base counterpart, Marv Owen, booted a ground ball.  One out later, Frankie Frisch singled Martin to third and he scored on Joe Medwick's fly to center field.

St. Louis then blew the game open with an eight-run second, with 11 men coming to bat in the inning.  Bill DeLancey led off with a single and, after Orsatti flied out, took second on Leo Durocher's base hit.  Dean grounded a base hit to right, loading the bases.  The key for Bridges at this point was to minimize the damage and live to fight another day.  It didn't happen.  Martin drilled a triple to left-center, clearing the bases and giving the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.  Jack Rothrock followed with a single to left-center scoring Martin to make it 5-0.  Frisch flied to left for the second out but Medwick doubled Rothrock to third.  Ripper Collins then singled both runners home to make it 7-0 and, just when it seemed that it couldn't get any worse for Bridges and the Tigers, Bill DeLancey cleared the pavilion roof in right for his second home run of the Series, putting the Cardinals on top 9-0.  That was it for Bridges and the beleaguered Detroit bullpen was called upon again.  Luke Hamlin avoided any further damage but it hardly seemed to matter.

St. Louis scored three more runs in the third, with another Tigers error playing a role.  After Durocher led off with a single, Dean hit a certain double play ball to short but Billy Rogell's relay to second baseman Charlie Gehringer was wide, and all hands were safe.  Martin doubled Durocher home, with Dean stopping at third, and Rothrock followed with a two-run single to increase the lead to 12-0.  Frisch's solo homer in the fifth made it 13-0.

Dean pitched around several walks but finally succumbed in the sixth inning with back-to-back free passes to Mickey Cochrane and Gehringer to open the inning.  Hank Greenberg's double ended the shutout and left runners on second and third.  A Goose Goslin ground ball got the second run home and Owen's fly plated a third, but the deficit was still ten runs.

Goslin tripled and scored in the eighth to make it 13-4 but the Cardinals got that run back in the bottom half of the inning when Dean doubled home Orsatti, who had singled two batters earlier.

Dean closed out the game with a perfect ninth.

The Tigers are now gasping for air and simply trying to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Cardinals.  Elden Auker will try to keep Detroit in the Series at least one day longer when he opposes Tex Carleton of St. Louis in Game 4.

Game 4, at Sportsman's Park:  Auker vs. Carleton

CARDS COMPLETE SERIES SWEEP BEHIND CARLETON'S GEM
St. Louis Starter is Surprise MVP

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 6 (AP) - In a World Series dominated by offense, Tex Carleton tossed a complete game four-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals completed their sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 4-1 victory in Game 4 at Sportsman's Park.  Carleton allowed a lone unearned run in the contest and, coupled with his critical two shutout innings en route to earning the win in Game 2, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Series.  All told, Carleton pitched 11 innings without allowing an earned run, surrendering just five hits.

For the first time in the Series, the St. Louis offense didn't run wild, but they still managed to swat out 11 more hits, finishing with 65 safeties in the four games.  For the Series, the Cardinals batted .369.

Detroit jumped out to an early lead in Game 4, aided by a St. Louis miscue.  Jo-Jo White led off with a base hit to left, then stole second base.  Catcher Bill DeLancey's throw went into center field, allowing White to reach third and he scored on Mickey Cochrane's single.  But any hope of a big inning was snuffed out when Charlie Gehringer bounced into a double play and the Tigers had to settle for a 1-0 lead.

Behind Elden Auker, the advantage held up until the fourth when the Cardinals knotted the score in an inning that seemed to be heading nowhere.  Auker retired Frankie Frisch on a fly to right and struck out Joe Medwick.  Ripper Collins then reached when his swinging bunt to the left side of the infield went for a hit.  DeLancey then cracked a triple that rolled all the way to the left-center field wall, scoring Collins to tie the game.  Ernie Orsatti was walked intentionally and Leo Durocher grounded to short to end the inning.

St. Louis seized control in the sixth.  With one out, Collins singled to center.  Auker pitched carefully to the red hot DeLancey and ended up walking him on four pitches to put runners on first and second.  That brought Orsatti to the plate.  Auker fell behind 2-0 and had to come in with a fastball.  Orsatti was sitting on the pitch and lined it to left-center for a base hit, scoring Collins to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead and advancing DeLancey to third.  Durocher then beat out a dribbler near the mound, allowing DeLancey to score.  With the lead now 3-1, Carleton fanned for the second out.  Tigers manager Mickey Cochrane called on Firpo Marberry to replace Auker, who was showing signs of fatigue after tossing four innings of shutout relief just two days prior.  But the strategy backfired as Jo-Jo White greeted Marberry with a single to left, scoring Orsatti to put St. Louis ahead 4-1.  Jack Rothrock flied to right to end the inning but the damage had been done.

Carleton pitched around a one-out single to Goose Goslin in the seventh to keep the three-run lead intact.  Whatever chance the Tigers had at a comeback came in the eighth inning, but it fizzled, in familiar fashion.  After Marv Owen popped out to open the frame Pete Fox laced a drive to right-center.  It scooted between Orsatti and Rothrock and Fox ended up on third base with a triple.  With the pitcher's spot due up, Gee Walker came on to pinch hit and hit a rocket toward third.  Pepper Martin speared it and doubled Fox off third, extinguishing out the threat.  It was reminiscent of the play in the 11th inning of Game 2 when Billy Rogell lined into a double play, third baseman unassisted, to thwart a potential game-winning Detroit rally.

Tommy Bridges, who had been driven from the mound in the second inning of Game 3, was brought in to hold down the fort in the bottom of the eighth and, despite surrendering a lead-off single to Orsatti, was able to do so by retiring the next three batters he faced in order.

Carleton took the mound in the top of the ninth to a huge ovation from the crowd.  The applause only grew in volume when he struck out White to open the frame.  Cochrane flied to right for the second out.  With the crowd on its feet he induced a first pitch grounder to short off the bat of Gehringer.  Leo Durocher fielded the ball cleanly and threw to Ripper Collins at first for the out, thus ending the game and the Series.

The Series concluded with the Cardinals outscoring the Tigers--baseball's most prolific offense in the regular season--36-19.  Detroit batted just .238 and the Gas House Gang out-homered the Tigers 4-1.
