PIRATES CLAIM NL PENNANT
9 Runs in Final 3 Innings Caps Comeback Win
CHICAGO, Sept. 29 (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates scored nine times in the final
three innings en route to a 10-3 comeback win over the Chicago Cubs to clinch
the National League pennant. The Pirates have one more regular season
game, at Philadelphia tomorrow, and then will head to the nation's capital in
preparation to take on the Washington Senators in the World Series beginning
October 4.
Emil Yde (18-6) tossed eight innings before running out of gas in the ninth
inning. Ray Kremer came on to mop up.
The contest was close for seven innings. Pittsburgh scored an unearned run
off Chicago starter and lose Sheriff Blake (4-9) in the very first inning.
Carson Bigbee led off with a single and stole second. One out later,
Jigger Statz booted Clyde Barnhart's grounder to put runners at first and third
and Glen Wright's long fly to right plated Bigbee with the game's first run.
The Cubs took the lead in the second. Otto Vogel singled with one out and
advanced to second when Yde walked Hack Miller. John Churry struck out but
Allen Elliott picked a choice moment for his first hit of the season--a
double--to score Vogel and Miller, giving the Cubs a 2-1 advantage.
The score remained unchanged until the Pirates took the lead for good in the
seventh. With one out, Rabbit Maranville tripled to right-center
field. Charlie Grimm then drove right fielder Butch Weis to the base of
the wall with a sacrifice fly, tying the game. Johnny Gooch then grounded
a single to center and surprised the flat-footed Cubs by stealing second.
Yde then aided his own cause by blooping a single to shallow center field,
scoring Gooch and putting Pittsburgh on top.
The Pirates broke the game open in the eighth with five runs. Maranville
doubled home a pair, Grimm singled Maranville home and Gooch followed with a
double that put runners on second and third. An error on relief pitcher
George Milstead scored the fourth run of the frame and Bigbee's sacrifice fly
capped the scoring.
Adding insult to injury Pittsburgh scored again on Pie Traynor's two-run homer
in the ninth. Chicago picked up a meaningless consolation run in the home
of the final frame before Kremer closed out the contest.
The Pirates will have plenty of time to set their rotation for the World Series
opener on Saturday.
