8TH INNING RALLY PROPELS PIRATES
Bucs Square Series, Lead Now 1 1/2

NEW YORK, September 24 (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning, overcoming a 2-1 Giants lead and beat the New Yorkers 5-2 at the Polo Grounds Wednesday afternoon.  The win moves the Pirates 1 1/2 games ahead of the Giants in the race for the National League flag.  Pittsburgh's magic number is now five.

The Giants took the lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Pirates stater Emil Yde (17-6) yielded an infield single to Freddie Lindstrom and then walked Ross Youngs and George Kelly to fill the bases with no outs.  Irish Meusel, starting his first game in nearly two weeks, lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Lindstrom, but avoided further trouble by inducing a double play ball from Bill Terry.

Yde and New York starter Virgil Barnes (16-9) then matched scoreless frames until the top of the fifth when Glen Wright led off the top of the inning with his sixth home run of the season deep into the lower seats in left field, evening the score at 1-1.

The Giants got that run right back in the bottom of the inning.  Hank Gowdy doubled off the right field wall and then Barnes helped himself by looping a single into right-center field, scoring Gowdy to make it 2-1.

That's where things stood when the game reached the eighth and fell apart for New York.  Rabbit Maranville led off with an infield hit and was sacrificed to second by Charlie Grimm.  Earl Smith then missed a home run to left by a matter of inches.  His drive hit the very top of the left field wall for a double, scoring Maranville in the process to even the game.  Clyde Barnhart ran for the slow-footed catcher Smith and Walter Mueller pinch hit for Yde.  Mueller roped a double to right-center field, plating Barnhart with the lead run.  That was it for Barnes as Giants manager John McGraw sent Claude Jonnard into the game and he retired Carson Bigbee on a grounder to the right side that advanced Mueller to third.  McGraw ordered Jonnard to walk Max Carey intentionally, preferring to take his chances with the slumping Eddie Moore.  But Moore rose to the occasion and foiled the strategy by slicing a 2-0 fastball into the right field corner for a two-run triple, putting Pittsburgh on top 5-2.

The Giants tried to get back into the game in the bottom half of the frame against reliever Don Songer.  Youngs led off with a single and two outs later Terry bounced a single into right field, bringing the potential tying run to the platem but Billy Southworth bounced one right back to Songer for the third out.

That was effectively the Giants' last gasp.  Johnny Morrison retired New York in order in the ninth to preserve the 5-2 victory.

Bigbee received the start in left field for the Pirates in place of Kiki Cuyler who apparently injured himself late in the previous day's game.  The nature of Cuyler's injury is unknown but the Pirates hope to have him back for the critical series finale tomorrow when Wilbur Cooper squares off against Artie Nehf.
