BENGALS' 2-OUT 9TH INNING RALLY STUNS A'S
Heilmann's Slam Is Game-Winner
DETROIT, Sept. 17 (AP) - Harry Heilmann's two-out grand slam capped a five-run
outburst and the Detroit Tigers rallied in the ninth inning to defeat the
Philadelphia Athletics 6-5 at Navin Field. All five of Detroit's ninth
inning runs came with two outs.
The late rally made a winner of Tigers starter Earl Whitehill (15-8). Slim
Harriss (6-13) absorbed the defeat.
With A's starter Sam Gray--who pitched a fine game--still on the hill to open
the ninth, Frank O'Rourke led off with a walk. Larry Woodall popped out,
but Les Burke, pinch hitting for Whitehill, was hit by a pitch putting runners
and first and second with one out. Johnny Bassler was called upon to hit
for Bob Jones, but Whitehill was lifted at that point for left-hander Stan
Baumgartner. Tigers manager Ty Cobb countered with the right-handed Fred
Haney who promptly walked to fill the bases. The tying run was now at the
plate in the form of Heinie Manush who grounded to Joe Hauser at first.
Hauser threw to the plate for the force but the relay attempt was too late to
get Manush. The score was still 5-1, but now two were out. Cobb was
next and he walked on five pitches, forcing in Detroit's second run and bringing
Heilmann to the plate as the potential winning run. Philadelphia's second
pitching change of the inning brought the right-handed Harriss into the game and
Heilmann drove a 3-1 fastball into the seats in straight away left field for a
game-winning grand slam.
The Athletics had built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings on sacrifice flies
off the bats of Al Simmons and Sammy Hale and Cy Perkins' RBI-double.
The Tigers cut the lead to 3-1 on an unearned run in the bottom of the
eighth. Cobb reached on a two-out error by shortstop Chick Galloway and,
following a walk, scored on Topper Rigney's single.
Philadelphia appeared to put the game away in the top of the ninth with two more
runs. Hauser singled home Bing Miller and then scored himself on
Galloway's two-out double, making it 5-1.
But that set the stage for Heilmann's heroics in the bottom of the frame.
The win was the fourth straight for Detroit. Philadelphia dropped its
third consecutive contest.
