SENATORS CLINCH PENNANT
Big Train Wins 23rd
DETROIT, Sept. 13 (AP) - The Washington Senators clinched the American League
flag with an 8-1 romp over the Detroit Tigers at Navin Field. Walter
Johnson turned in another strong outing and won his league-leading 23rd game of
the season in the process. It was, coincidentally, Johnson's 23rd complete
game as well, tying him with Sloppy Thurston of the White Sox for the circuit
lead.
The Senators will now prepare for a World Series appearance against the winner
of a tight National League pennant race that many pundits predict will go right
down to the wire.
Washington took the lead in the very first inning and never looked back when
Muddy Ruel's two-out single scored Bucky Harris and made it 2-0 in the second
when Earl McNeely drove in Mule Shirley with a single to left-center.
The Tigers stayed close and then closed to within a run in the bottom of the
sixth when Harry Heilmann drove a Johnson fastball into the seats in left center
field for his sixth home run of the season.
But the Senators got the run right back in the seventh off Tigers starter Earl
Whitehill (14-8). With two outs, Bucky Harris lined a double into the
right field corner and Sam Rice followed with a double to the left-center field
gap, scoring Harris.
Ruel's third home run of the year, a solo shot leading off the eighth against
Detroit reliever Ken Holloway, made it 4-1 and then Washington put the game away
with four runs in the ninth. McNeely and Harris led off the frame with
consecutive singles off Holloway, who was replaced by left-hander Ed
Wells. But the southpaw promptly loaded the bases by walking Rice and then
forced home the fifth Senators run by issuing a free pass to Goose Goslin.
Pinch hitter Pinky Hargrave rolled into a 1-2-3 double play, but Ossie Bluege
added insult to injury by belting a home run to left, plating three runs, and
putting Washington on top 8-1.
Johnson allowed a leadoff single to Frank O'Rourke but retired the next three
Tigers to end the game and send the Senators on to the World Series.
