BUCS MAKE CARDS WALK PLANK TWICE
17 Winss in 18 Games
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 6 (AP) - There's hot and then there's whatever it is that the
Pittsburgh Pirates are right now. Scalding?
The Pirates took both ends of a doubleheader from the St. Louis Cardinals at
Forbes Field, winning the opener 9-2 and the nightcap 5-1. Pittsburgh has
now won seven straight and 17 of its last 18 games in a stretch dating back to
August 20. The Cardinals have now dropped 10 consecutive contests.
Emil Yde (12-6) tossed a complete game six-hitter in the first game and earned
the victory. Lee Meadows (15-8) matched Yde in game two, firing a six-hit
complete game of his own.
The Pirates spotted St. Louis a 1-0 lead on a Tommy Thevenow sacrifice fly in
the second inning of the opener before taking the lead in the fourth and
methodically blowing the game open in the middle innings. Pittsburgh tied
the contest in the third on a Glen Wright sacrifice fly and took the lead in the
fourth on a bases loaded double play grounder off Yde's bat.
The Pirates then scored three runs in the sixth and again in the seventh innings
to put the game away. With Cardinals starter Johnny Stuart still on the
hill, Charlie Grimm belted his second home run of the year, a two-run clout, to
make it 4-1. Kiki Cuyler's bases loaded sacrifice fly later in the inning
capped the frame's scoring, but Pittsburgh roared right back with three more
runs off reliever Eddie Dyer in the seventh on Johnny Gooch's two-run double and
Eddie Moore's sacrifice fly, which put the Pirates ahead 8-1.
Ray Blades gave St. Louis a consolation run in the top of the eighth with a solo
home run, but the Pirates regained their seven-run lead in the bottom half of
the inning on a Rabbit Maranville fielder's choice grounder, which ended the
scoring in the game.
The nightcap was a swifter encounter. Again the Cardinals took a 1-0
second inning lead, this time on Bill Sherdel's RBI ground out.
St. Louis starter and loser Jesse Haines (10-13) kept the Pirates at bay until
the fifth. Grimm led off with a walk and one out later moved to second on
Meadows' infield hit. Moore's hit-and-run grounder to short advanced the
runners to second and third and Max Carey cracked his seventh home run of the
year--a three-run shot--into the right field grandstand to give Pittsburgh a 3-1
lead.
It was more than Meadows would need. The Cardinals only had three
baserunners after the fifth inning and none advanced past second.
The Pirates put the game on ice in the eighth. Carey led off with a double
to left and took third when left fielder Blades misplayed the ball. With
the infield in, Cuyler's grounder to first left Carey at third and Wright was
intentionally walked to set up a potential inning-ending double play. But
Pie Traynor foiled the strategy by reaching on an infield single off the glove
of a diving Hi Myers at second, making it 4-1 and leaving runners on first and
second. Maranville ended the scoring with a single to left, driving home
Wright with Pittsburgh's fifth run.
The sweep puts the Pirates two games ahead of the second place Giants pending
the outcome of New York's doubleheader at Philadelphia.
The doubleheader represented the seventh and eighth consecutive games that the
Cardinals have played without star second baseman Rogers Hornsby. During
that stretch, St. Louis is 0-8.
