ERHARDT BAFFLES BRAVES
Fournier's 29th HR Paces Robins Attack
BOSTON, Sept. 5 (AP) -- Jack Fournier and Andy High belted home runs and Rube
Erhardt completely stymied the Boston bats as the Brooklyn Robins scored a
fast-paced 3-0 victory before a sparse gathering at Braves Field.
Erhardt (3-2), who has been struggling lately, retired the final 15 batters he
faced en route to the four-hit shutout. Cotton Tierney's leadoff double in
the bottom of the fifth represented the only Boston baserunner to reach second
base.
The Robins would score all the runs they needed in the very first inning.
Andy High led off by drawing a base on balls from Braves starter Jesse Barnes
(12-16). High advanced to second on Johnny Mitchell's squibber back to
Barnes. After Zack Wheat grounded to short, Fournier drove a Barnes
fastball inside the right field foul pole, giving Brooklyn a 2-0 lead. The
home run was Fournier's National League leading 29th of the season. The
Robins first baseman also leads the NL in runs batted in with 138.
High capped the scoring with a home run, his eight of the season, leading off
the third.
Barnes raised his game a notch at that point and prevented the Robins from
advancing another runner past first. 16 of Brooklyn's final 19 hitters
were retired.
Erhardt's complete game was the league-leading 82nd of the season for the
Robins.
