DOUBLE ZEROES
Reds Blank Cards Twice
CINCINNATI, Sept. 1 (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds became the first team in the big
leagues this year to shutout their opponents twice on the same day, besting the
St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap of a Labor Day
twin bill at Redland Field.
Carl Mays (13-14) earned his first shutout of the year in game one, blanking the
Cardinals on six hits, while fanning six and walking no one. Mays earned
run average since the beginning of July is now 2.28, reversing a dreadful first
half performance. Despite Mays' fine twirling, his record over that period
is just 5-5, indicating poor run support.
In this contest, Mays needed little help. The Reds scored all the runs
they would need in the second inning on Ivy Wingo's two-out, two-run
triple. St. Louis third baseman Hi Myers' error on Sammy Bohne's two-out
ground ball allowed Babe Pinelli, who has tripled, to score an unearned
insurance run in the fourth and Cincinnati effectively iced the game in the
sixth on Bohne's two-run single.
The Cardinals had a mild threat in the first and loaded the bases with two outs
in the sixth but failed to score either time. Only one St. Louis runner
reached third base.
In game two, Rube Benton fired his first shutout of the year, a four-hitter, and
won his tenth game in the process. No Cardinal baserunner reached third.
Cincinnati scored the game's only two runs off hard luck loser Jesse Haines
(10-12) in the fifth inning on Bohne's two-run home run down the left field
line. The longball scored Rube Bressler, who had been hit by a Haines
pitch.
The sweep at the hands of the Reds leaves the Cardinals with a six-game losing
streak. Player of the year candidate Rogers Hornsby has missed the last
four games with a nagging leg injury and the St. Louis offense has been clearly
impacted; the Cardinals have scored only four runs in Hornsby's absence.
