DOAK REMAINS UNBLEMISHED IN BROOKLYN UNIFORM
Robins Stifle Giants Again

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug. 30 (AP) - Bill Doak improved to 12-0 as a member of the Robins, leading his club past the New York Giants 2-1 in front of 25,924 at Ebbets Field as Brooklyn continued its quest to remain relevant in chase for the National League pennant.  The crowd was the largest in Brooklyn since a June 23 contest, also against the Giants.

It was the second straight win for the Robins over the Giants and temporarily demoted New York into second place, one-half game behind Pittsburgh.  The outcome of the Pirates' game, played against Cincinnati in western Pennsylvania, was unavailable at press time.

Since being acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in mid-June, Doak has been flawless.  The right-hander has solidified the Brooklyn starting rotation, providing manager Wilbert Robinson with a third reliable option to go with Dazzy Vance and Burleigh Grimes.  The Robins' record stood at 23-23 when Doak was acquired; the club is now 19 games over .500 and Doak's 12-0 mark (15 appearances, ten starts, eight complete games) has a Brooklynite has much to do with that.

On this afternoon, Doak and Giants starter Hugh McQuillan locked up in a pitching duel that was apparent from the outset.  The Robins drew first blood in the opening frame.  Andy High led off with a single and stole second.  He advanced to third on Johnny Mitchell's long fly to left-center.  Zack Wheat's sacrifice fly to Irish Muesel in left plated High.

The game remained 1-0 Brooklyn until the top of the fifth when New York finally got on the board.  Hack Wilson led off and drew a four-pitch walk from Doak.  Travis Jackson fanned, but Frank Snyder's looper into left put runners on first and second with one out.  McQuillan's sacrifice attempt resulted in a force at third, but on the first pitch to Henie Groh Doak uncorked a wild pitch, advancing the runners to second and third.  One strike later Groh slapped a single between shortstop Mitchell and Wes Stock at third.  Snyder scored easily, but Zack Wheat came up throwing and gunned McQuillan down at the plate, preserving the 1-1 tie.  It was the only run the Giants would score.

The Robins scored the go-ahead run in the seventh.  Tommy Griffith singled through the shortstop hole and Zack Taylor put Brooklyn on top by tripling to the right-center gap.  It appeared that the Robins had a chance to break the game open, but McQuillan rose to the occasion, retiring Doak on a pop fly to second, walking High intentionally, eliminating Mitchell on a shallow fly to center and spearing Wheat's one hopper himself for the third out of the inning and keeping his team within one run.

Doak, however, was too good.  He set the Giants down in order in the eighth and then stifled a New York threat in the ninth.  Frankie Frisch lined a single to right to open the inning.  Ross Youngs flied to Griffith in shallow right for the first out and then Bill Terry, pinch hitting for the slumping Muesel, flied to left.  George Kelly's single to left kept the frame alive but Doak jammed Hack Wilson with a 1-2 fastball, inducing a weak grounder to short that Mitchell turned into a game-ending fielder's choice.

The two teams will conclude their rain-shortened three-game series tomorrow afternoon with Brooklyn seeking the sweep.
