BUCS OUTLAST GIANTS IN 13 INNINGS
3-Run 13th Pulls Pittsburgh to Within 1/2 Game of NL Lead
NEW YORK, July 30 (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates plated three runs in the top of
the 13th inning to slip past the New York Giants, 4-1, before 13,256 at the Polo
Grounds. The victory moved the Pirates to within a half-game of the Giants
for first place in the National League.
Wilbur Cooper (15-8) was a workhorse for Pittsburgh, throwing 12 innings and
allowing just one unearned run. In his first start of the year for the
Giants, Claude Jonnard toiled for nine innings and was touched for a single
tally, but did not figure in the decision.
The Giants' only run of the game never should have scored. Jonnard led off
the bottom of the third by rolling a ball back to the mound and Cooper muffed
the routine play for an error. One out later Frankie Frisch singled Cooper
to third and Hack Wilson then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score the
Giants pitcher.
New York had a chance to extend its lead in the sixth. With one out, Irish
Meusel singled and was chased to third on George Kelly's base hit.
Highpockets then stole second, giving the Giants runners on second and third and
only one out. But Travis Jackson's shallow fly ball to Kiki Cuyler forced
the runners to hold and Cooper induced Heinie Groh to foul to catcher Earl Smith
to end the inning.
Jonnard held the Pirates in check through six but Max Carey belted his fifth
home run of the year on an 0-1 pitch from the Giants starter deep into the lower
grand stand to knot the contest.
Pittsburgh had an excellent scoring opportunity in the top of the ninth.
Carey drew a walk off Jonnard and promptly stole second, his league leading 27th
theft of the year. Cuyler sacrificed Carey to third. But again, a
shallow fly ball literally came up short. This time, Glen Wright was the
goat, lifting little more than a pop-up that Wilson speared only forty-odd feet
behind second base. Giants manager John McGraw then ordered that Pie
Traynor be walked intentionally, a tactic that paid off when Jonnard jammed
Rabbit Maranville, forcing a weak ground ball to Kelly at first to end the
threat.
The game remained knotted at one into the thirteenth frame. After
Jonnard's nine-inning stint, Leon Cadore had made his season's debut with three
perfect innings of relief for the Giants. Walter Huntzinger was called
upon to deal with the Pirates in the thirteenth and things almost immediately
went wrong for the right-hander. Charlie Grimm lined Huntzinger's first
pitch into right field for a single and, after falling behind 0-2, Johnny Gooch
advanced Jolly Cholly to second with a base hit of his own. Emil Yde pinch
hit for Cooper and advanced both runners with a perfect sacrifice bunt.
McGraw pulled the infield in but Carson Bigbee bounced a grounder between Groh
and Travis Jackson, scoring both runners, with Bigbee taking second base on the
unsuccessful throw to the plate. Carey flied out to right with Bigbee
advancing to third after the catch and Cuyler was then given a free pass to
first. But this time the intentional walk didn't pay off; Wright singled
to left to score Bigbee, giving Pittsburgh a three-run advantage.
Huntzinger finally got the third out when Traynor popped to short but the damage
had been done.
The Giants, as is their wont, tried to fight back in the bottom half of the
inning off new pitcher Johnny Morrison. Meusel walked to start the
inning. Kelly flied out and then Jackson rolled to short, with Meusel
taking second, for the second out of the frame. Groh walked, bringing the
tying run to the plate in the form of Huntzinger. McGraw called upon Bill
Terry to pinch hit and Morrison finally brought the game to a close by inducing
the lefty swinger to hit into a 5-4 fielder's choice.
Cooper was brilliant in earning the victory, allowing only ten hits and two
walks in 12 innings to the hard-hitting Giants. Jonnard, in his first
start of the campaign, was every bit as effective (five hits, two walks) in
taming the potent Pirates' lineup.
The two teams will meet for the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at
the Polo Grounds.
