EHMKE STYMIES CHISOX AS BOSOX CRUISE
Hub Right-Hander 1st In Majors to 15 Wins
BOSTON, July 14 (AP) -- Howard Ehmke became the first big league hurler to win
15 games this season as the Boston Red Sox broke a three-game losing streak,
whipping the Chicago White Sox, 8-2, before 4,643 on Monday afternoon at Fenway
Park. In light of defeats befalling Washington and Detroit, the surprising
Bostonians find themselves just 3 1/2 games out of first place in the American
League.
Ehmke (15-5) spotted Chicago two first inning runs but blanked the White Sox the
rest of the way while he and his teammates--Ehmke helped his own cause with a
two-run single in the fourth--battered Red Faber (3-3) to the tune of eight runs
from the third inning through the sixth.
Trailing by two runs entering the bottom of the third, the Red Sox tied the game
on consecutive RBI hits by Bill Wambsganss (a double) and Joe Harris (a
triple). Boston then took the lead in the fourth on the Ehmke single which
was followed by a Danny Clark sacrifice fly.
The Red Sox blew the game open in the sixth, capping the scoring in the
process. Steve O'Neill led off with a double and Howie Shanks' bunt
attempt was muffed by White Sox first baseman Earl Sheely, leaving runners on
first and third with none out. Ehmke flied to shallow right for the first
out, with the runners holding and when Clark popped to Eddie Collins at second
it appeared as though Faber might escape the inning unscathed. But he
clipped Wambsganss with an inside pitch, filling the bases, and Harris followed
with a two-run single to center, putting Boston on top 7-2. Bobby Veach
added insult to injury by squibbing a single between short and third, plating
the third run of the frame in the process. Ike Boone flied to right to end
the inning but the damage had been done.
Ehmke held the hard-hitting White Sox to five safeties after the first inning,
fanned five and went to complete his 17the game of the year. The Boston
right-hander moved three wins ahead of his nearest pursuers--Walter Johnson and
Joe Shaute in the AL and Johnny Morrison and Wilbur Cooper in the National
League--in his quest to lead all of baseball in that category this year.
