A PERFECT DAY AT THE PLATE
Ruth, Yanks Crush ChiSox
CHICAGO, June 6 (AP) -- Babe Ruth had a flawless day at bat, going 5-5 with
three doubles, two home runs--one a grand slam--a pair of walks and driving in
nine as the New York Yankees won their eighth straight contest, a 23-9 drubbing
of the Chicago White Sox before 19,435 at Comiskey Park. The 23 runs
scored by the Yankees is the top output in the major leagues thus far this
season. The Washington Senators held the previous high in a 20-2 win over
the Boston Red Sox on May 8.
Ruth's nine runs batted in surpasses the Reds' George Burns as the top single
game performance in the majors to date this year. Burns had knocked in
eight against the Cardinals on April 27. The two home runs give Ruth 16 on
the season--best in all of baseball--and the grand slam was his second in a week
(May 30 off Stan Baumgartner of the A's).
The Yankees were simply relentless in this game, battering a trio of White Sox
pitchers for 29 hits while drawing five walks. Whitey Witt had four hits
and scored four times. Wally Pipp, who finally seems to be coming out of a
season-long slump, had four hits including a double and a triple and scored
three times. Everett Scott was 5-6 with a double and a triple and Wally
Schang had four hits and drove in three.
But it was Ruth who awed everyone by reaching base safely in all seven of his
plate appearances and mashing out five extra base hits to a tune of 14 total
bases (also a major league season high, eclipsing the 13 TBs of Cleveland's Tris
Speaker on May 1, also against the White Sox). Ruth doubled in the first
and again in the third. He then walked in the fourth. All of that
was against Chicago starter Doug McWeeny. Then against reliever Ted
Blankenship, he belted a two-run double in the sixth and walked in the seventh.
Finally, against Sarge Connally, he crushed a three-run home run in the eighth
before applying the coup de grace--a ninth inning grand slam.
Despite the devastating attack, New York starter Sad Sam Jones ended up with a
no-decision. Jones, who entered the game with a 1.62 ERA in seven
appearances (six starts), was hammered by the White Sox to the tune of 10 hits,
three walks and seven runs in 3 1/3 innings. He left the game trailing
7-5. Fortunately for the Yankees, Milt Gaston (4-0) came on and pitched
very well, holding Chicago to a single consolation run in 4 1/3 innings of work,
allowing his battering ram offense to do its thing and put the game firmly out
of reach. Bob Shawkey mopped up the final four outs.
Despite scoring nine times, the White Sox lost their fourth straight and remain
in last place in the American League, one-half game behind Philadelphia.
Chicago left fielder Bibb Falk went 1-3 with two bases on balls and saw his
batting average fall below .500 for the first time since May 13 when he was 5-11
on the season.
