BUCS WHITEWASH PHILS FOR 2ND STRAIGHT DAY
Cooper Stars on Mound, At Plate
PITTSBURGH, May 17 (AP) -- Wilbur Cooper scattered eight Philadelphia hits en
route to a complete game and also starred in the batter's box as the Pittsburgh
Pirates shutout the Phillies in front of 14,163 at Forbes Field. It was
the second consecutive shutout of Philadelphia by Pittsburgh; Ray Kremer turned
the trick yesterday in a 4-0 Pirates' victory. The win leaves Pittsburgh
in second place in the National League, three games behind the streaking New
York Giants.
The Pirates took the lead in the game immediately. In the bottom of the
first, George Wright's one-out ground ball scored Kiki Cuyler from third to make
it 1-0. Cuyler had been hit by a Clarence Mitchell (0-4) pitch, stole
second and advanced to third on Butch Henline's throwing error.
In the second inning, the Bucs seized control of the contest. Mitchell's
wildness continued as he hit Pie Traynor to beging the frame and, one out later,
plunked Charlie Grimm. After Walter Schmidt flied out, leaving runners at
first and second, Cooper drove home the club's second run with the first of his
three hits on the day, a single through the box. Max Carey's double plated
two more runs and Cuyler's single capped the inning's scoring. The Pirates
led at this point by a score of 5-0.
The Phillies never showed much sign of life from that point on, despite amassing
eight hits. Cooper (5-2) walked only two batters while striking out
three. None of the eight hits he allowed were for extra bases.
The Pirates added a couple of runs in the fourth and with the game's outcome
more or less decided the Phillies, their relief corps overburdened, tried to
nurse Mitchell close to the game's final innings. Two more runs in the
sixth, however--on Cuyler's two-out, two-run home run--spelled the end of that
plan. Whitey Glazner recorded the final out of the sixth and Huck Betts
mopped up the final two innings.
Betts, however, surrendered three more runs in the eighth, with Cooper's one-out
double starting the rally. Walter Mueller and Eddie Moore drove the runs
home with a pair of singles.
The crowd at today's game was the third largest of the season for the Pirates
and the second largest since the opening day sellout of 25,134 on April 24.
