BRAVES BLANKED FOR THIRD STRAIGHT GAME
Scoreless Streak Reaches 31 Innings in Loss to Cards
BOSTON, Sept. 19 (AP) - In the last three games, Braves pitchers have
surrendered a grand total of five runs. The Braves' record in those
contests? 0-3. The Braves were shutout for the third consecutive
game, this time by St. Louis starter Pea Ridge Day (1-0) who was making his
season's debut. O'Day stifled Boston on just five hits en route to the 1-0
whitewashing. The Braves wasted a fine start by Skinny Graham (1-2) who
allowed held the Cardinals scoreless until surrendering the game's lone run in
the top of the eighth.
The larger story was the Braves' inability to score. Yesterday Boston was
shutout by the Chicago Cubs in both ends of a doubleheader at Braves Field,
dropping the opener 3-0 and falling 1-0 in the nightcap.
In today's game, it seemed that the Braves were poised to break their scoreless
streak in the very first inning. After Graham blanked St. Louis in the top
of the frame, Dave Bancroft led off the bottom half by reaching on a Rogers
Hornsby error. Frank Wilson's single to center put runners on first with
no outs and Casey Stengel's slow roller to second allowed both runners to move
into scoring position with just one out. But Stuffy McInnis' fly to right
was too shallow to score Bancroft and Day escaped damage by inducing Cotton
Tierney to roll out to Hornsby at second.
Boston had another scoring chance in the third, after being retired in order in
the previous two innings. Stengel singled through the box to start the
inning and promptly stole second. McInnis' fly ball to right was deep
enough to allow Stengel to tag and advance to third after the catch. But
Tierney popped to Jim Bottomley at first for the second out and Herb Thomas
grounded out to Tommy Thevenow at short to end the frame.
The Braves never got another runner past second base.
The Cardinals broke through with the game's only run in the eighth. With
one out, the pitcher Day singled to right-center. Heinie Mueller's double
into the right field corner moved Day to third and Taylor Douthit's sacrifice
fly to right plated Day.
The Braves' streak of 31 consecutive scoreless innings is the second longest in
the major leagues this season. The Cardinals went 36 straight innings over
parts of five games--three of them shutouts--from August 31 through September 4.
Boston will try to avoid the ignominy of setting a new season's record tomorrow
when they face Flint Rhem as part of a doubleheader against the Cardinals at
Braves Field.
